Forgiving someone is free. Trusting them again is earned. Those are two different things, and that’s okay.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

People collapse two separate decisions into one here. Releasing somebody costs you nothing they have to earn, and you can do it today. Trusting them again is a separate matter, built slowly out of evidence, and nobody is owed it on request. Mixing them up is why people either refuse to forgive, fearing they will have to hand everything back, or forgive and immediately get hurt in the same way again.

Say the two parts separately this week if the conversation comes. Forgiven now, trusted as it is shown, and no apology for the second half.
