If you only want to serve where there’s a stage, you’re auditioning, not serving.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

The test is whether you would still do it with the visible part removed. Wanting to help in the roles that come with attention is normal, and it is also indistinguishable from wanting attention. The difference only shows when the options are unglamorous. An audition is aimed at being chosen; service is aimed at the thing getting done.

Volunteer for the least visible job available to you this month. Setup, cleanup, childcare, the spreadsheet nobody wants. Then check your own reaction, because the reluctance you notice is useful information about why you were offering.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Would you still volunteer for the task with no audience?
