Thanking God out loud for your food in front of friends is a tiny flag planted on a normal Tuesday.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Doing something small and visibly yours in front of people who do not do it takes more nerve than any argument would. There is no debate attached, nothing to defend, just a few seconds that make something about you public. Most of the time nobody reacts at all. It feels enormous because you are not hiding, and you had grown used to hiding.

Let something you only do in private be seen once this week, without apologising. Say the words, then carry on with the conversation. The silence afterwards is almost always shorter than you imagined.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you do in private but not in front of friends?
