Giving grace feels noble. Receiving it feels awkward. That awkward feeling is your pride leaving.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being the generous one is comfortable because it keeps you in the stronger position. Being on the receiving end puts you in debt and in need, with nothing to offer back, which is why people deflect help so quickly. That squirming feeling is accurate: something is being dismantled. It is usually the part of you that wanted to need nothing.

Next time somebody offers you something, accept it without a counter-offer. No insisting on paying, no promising to return the favour immediately. Just say thank you and let the discomfort sit there for a minute.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did accepting help make you feel worse than giving it?
