Everybody needs a gap between one version of the day and the next. The minute in the car is not avoidance; it is the only place where nothing is asked of you, and the house starts the second the door opens. You have begun doing this yourself, which is the point at which it stops looking strange.

Take the minute on purpose instead of feeling guilty about it, and do not spend it on your phone. Then give it to the people you live with: let somebody come in at their own speed. Mentioning that you understood it is also worth doing once.
