Your accent in a new language tells people to slow down for you. That’s not a flaw. It’s a signal.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

An accent is information, and it does useful work before you have said anything difficult. It tells the person in front of you to slow down, choose easier words, and give you a second pass, which is exactly the help you need and the hardest help to ask for out loud. The thing itself is doing you a favour.

So keep talking rather than shortening every sentence to hide it. When somebody speeds up, say plainly that you are still learning and ask them to go slower. Most people adjust immediately and think nothing of it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What about how you speak do you treat as a flaw?
