Leaving your hometown teaches you which parts of you were the town and which parts were you.

You cannot tell where you end and your surroundings begin while you are still inside them. The accent, the pace, the jokes that always land, the things everybody assumes: all of it feels like personality until you are somewhere it does not work. Half of what you thought was you turns out to have been the place. The other half comes with you, and that is the part worth knowing about.
