Growth doesn’t make you immune to old feelings. It just makes you faster at noticing them.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Changing does not delete the old feeling. The jealousy, the flare of temper, the urge to disappear: all of it still turns up, and expecting otherwise is what makes people decide they have made no progress at all. What actually changes is the lag. You used to be halfway through the reaction before you noticed, and now you catch it closer to the start.

So measure the gap rather than the feeling. Next time something old flares, note roughly how long it took to recognise. That number is the real score, and it shortens.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which old feeling do you now catch sooner than before?
