What gets recorded is always the result. You see the finished solo, the dunk, the fluent conversation, and you never see the ninety-nine ugly repetitions underneath, so your sense of how this works is calibrated entirely on highlights. The actual process is tedious, repetitive, and almost impossible to make interesting to anybody watching.

So keep score of reps rather than of how good it sounded. Mark the page every time you sit down with it. On the day something suddenly works, that tally will be the only explanation available, and it will be the right one.
