A family teaches lessons through what it discusses and what it refuses to discuss.

The silences teach as much as the conversations. What a family never mentions, money, illness, a certain relative, a certain year, tells a child exactly which subjects are dangerous, and that lesson lasts decades. Nobody has to state the rule for it to be learned. Children are excellent at reading what is not said.

Name the topics that were off limits where you grew up and notice whether you still avoid them. Choose one to be able to discuss plainly with people you trust. Breaking a silence in yourself does not require confronting anyone.
