Some people quit a sport and feel relief before they feel the loss. Both are allowed.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Relief and grief do not take polite turns. You can put down something you carried for years and feel your shoulders drop first, then notice weeks later the hole where Saturday mornings used to be. The relief is not proof you never loved it, and the loss is not proof you chose wrong.

If you have stepped away from something, let both feelings sit there without ranking them. Say the relief out loud to someone you trust. When the missing turns up later, read it as a sign it mattered rather than as a reason to go back.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Have you felt relief about an ending you expected to mourn?
