Not being the baby of the family anymore is a demotion that turns into a promotion.

Losing the youngest position does feel like a loss at first, because the attention and the allowances went with it. What replaces it arrives more slowly: being trusted, being asked rather than told, being somebody’s example instead of everybody’s charge. The trade looks bad for about a year and then looks obviously good.

Take one of the new responsibilities on deliberately rather than having it assigned. Teaching something, handling something yourself, being the one who is relied on. Claiming it early is what turns it from a loss into standing.
