An apology without a change is just a nice speech. The change is the part people believe.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Words are the cheap half of an apology. Anyone can produce the right sentences, and most people have heard enough of them to stop treating them as evidence. What gets believed is the next instance of the same situation handled differently, which is why trust rebuilds slowly and never through better phrasing.

If you owe somebody an apology, keep the words short and name the specific thing you will do instead. Then do that thing when it next comes up, especially when it is inconvenient. Let them notice it rather than pointing it out.
