People who are happy for you without making your news about themselves are rare company.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

There is a common response to good news that quickly becomes a story about the listener. Their similar experience, their advice, their own comparable moment. It is rarely malicious and it does take the moment away. Someone who can stay entirely inside your news, ask about it, and be plainly glad, is doing something surprisingly uncommon.

When someone tells you something good, hold off on your own version for at least a few minutes. Ask two questions before you say anything about yourself. Then notice who does the same for you, and keep them.
