“You’re a natural” can make someone quit the first time it gets hard. Praise the work instead.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being told you have a gift sounds generous and quietly sets a trap. If the ability is innate, then struggling must mean the gift was never real, so the first serious difficulty becomes a reason to quit rather than a normal stage. Praise aimed at effort leaves somebody a place to stand when it stops being easy.

Change what you compliment this week, in other people and in yourself. Say that somebody clearly practised, or that they kept going after the third attempt. When something is hard for you, treat that as the work arriving rather than as a verdict.
