Your mood walks into the room before you do. On a team, it becomes everybody’s weather.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Moods are contagious and travel fastest downhill, from whoever has the most standing to everybody else. People read your face in the first two seconds and adjust what they were about to say, so a bad morning quietly deletes several conversations that would have been useful. You do not really get a private mood in a shared space.

Decide at the door what you are bringing in, especially when the day has been rough. If it is genuinely bad, name it in one sentence so nobody takes it personally. Then ask somebody a question, which shifts the temperature faster than any announcement.
