Don’t ask the team to stay late if you’re the first one checking the time.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

People watch where your attention goes far more closely than they listen to what you ask for. Requesting extra effort while visibly counting down undoes the request, because the obvious conclusion is that the work matters less to you than your evening does. Whatever you are doing is the instruction, and the words are commentary on it.

If you need the extra hour, be the last to leave or do not ask for it. Put your phone away and work alongside them. If you genuinely have to go, say why out loud and make it an exception rather than a habit.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Are you watching the clock while asking others to stay?
