Don’t make the new kid earn basic respect. Respect is the starting line. Trust is what gets earned.
LEADERSHIP
LEADERSHIP
Two different things get confused by using one word for both. Being treated decently is not a reward for performance, it is what anybody is owed on arrival, including the person who has proved nothing yet. Trust is the other thing, and that genuinely does get built over time out of what somebody does.
Give the new person the baseline immediately: their name, a straight answer, a place in the conversation. Keep the responsibilities for when there is a track record. Making somebody audition for ordinary courtesy mostly teaches them what this place is like.
What do you make newcomers prove before treating them decently?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
