When the new hire messes up, remember someone once let your mistakes slide while you learned.

Somebody covered for you while you were slow and useless, and you probably did not know it at the time. Memory is unhelpfully short about this, so by the time you are the competent one, a new person’s mistakes look like carelessness rather than the stage you went through yourself. Patience here is mostly just accurate recall.
Next time somebody new gets it wrong, fix it with them rather than around them, and say you did the same thing once. Be specific about your version. It turns an embarrassment into something that passes.
Who covered for you while you were still learning the job?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
