Good team culture sounds like “that’s how we do it here,” not “you’ll get in trouble for that.”
LEADERSHIP
LEADERSHIP
There is a difference between a standard people have taken on and a rule they are dodging punishment for. The first survives when nobody is watching. The second collapses the moment the chance of being caught drops, which is most of the time. How you phrase an expectation tells people which kind they are in, and threats quietly teach that the only reason to do it right is enforcement.
Listen to how you explain your group’s standards this week. Say what the group does and why, rather than what happens to people who fail. If somebody falls short, talk about the standard instead of the penalty.
Does your group behave from habit or from fear of punishment?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
