Hype gets people in the door. Being organized is what keeps them from walking out.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Excitement is good at starting things and useless at holding them. People arrive because something sounded worth their time, then stay or go depending on whether the hour they spent felt wasted. Disorganisation reads as disrespect even when nobody says so, because it spends other people’s time to cover for your planning. Enthusiasm with nothing behind it is how groups shrink after week two.

Before your next meeting or practice, write down what happens in the first ten minutes. Start when you said and finish when you said. Have something ready for anybody who turns up not knowing what to do.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Did people join something of yours and then quietly leave?
