Bad news delivered early is a problem. Bad news discovered late is a betrayal.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Facts change character depending on when they surface. Told early, they are something a group can work with, and saying them is just part of the job. Found out late, they arrive with the extra information that you knew and chose not to speak, and that second part is what people react to. The delay rather than the news is what costs you.

Think of the thing you are hoping will resolve itself before anybody notices, and mention it this week. Lead with what you know and what you are already doing. Take the awkward conversation now instead of the worse one later.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What will people be angry you knew about earlier?
