LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

A quick admission closes the conversation without changing anything, which is why it feels so comfortable to offer. What people are waiting for is evidence that the same thing will not happen again, and that only arrives as a specific change they can check. A vague apology asks the group to take your improvement on faith. A named change gives them something to hold you to.

After your next mistake, say out loud the one thing you are changing. Make it concrete enough that somebody could tell whether you did it. Then ask them to point it out if you slip.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

After apologizing, did you name what you would change?
