Got the spot someone else wanted? Be generous to them first.

Coming out ahead of somebody leaves a small debt that only you can settle. They have to live with losing something to you, and what happens next decides whether you have a rival or somebody who is glad for you. Going first matters because the person who lost cannot: any move from them looks like sulking or currying favour. The generosity costs you nothing you actually needed.
Find the person who wanted what you got and speak to them this week. Acknowledge that they wanted it, and say one true thing about their case. Then look for a way to make them part of it.
Who wanted your place, and have you been generous since?
