A patrol moves at the speed of its slowest hiker. Plan for that instead of pretending otherwise.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

A group’s real pace is set by whoever is struggling most, whether or not the plan admits it. Pretending otherwise speeds nobody up. It just turns a slow walk into a slow walk with someone being made to feel like a burden. Honest planning builds the actual pace into the route, the breaks and the timing, so nobody has to be the problem.

When you organise anything with other people, plan around the person with the least time, money or experience rather than the most. Ask before you set the pace. The group gets further, and it is still a group when it arrives.
