The longer you study something, the more you see the parts nobody’s figured out yet. That’s where it gets fun.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Early on, a subject looks finished, because everything you meet has already been worked out and handed to you in a tidy form. Keep going and the edges appear: questions still open, arguments not settled, places where the honest answer is that nobody knows. That is where a subject stops being something to absorb and becomes something you could add to. Most people leave before they ever see it.

Ask somebody who knows your favourite subject well what is still unresolved in it. Read a little about one of those open questions. Knowing the edge is there changes how you read everything before it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

In your favorite subject, what still has no settled answer?
