The past isn’t a straight line of progress. Plenty of good ideas got lost and found again later.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

History is usually taught as a staircase, each step above the last, which hides how much was known and then forgotten. Methods vanished with the people who held them, and ideas sat unused for centuries before somebody picked them back up. Progress is less a line than a long argument with gaps in it.

When something is described as new, ask whether anybody has tried it before. Old solutions to your exact problem are common and findable. It also eases the quiet worry that everything worth doing has already been done.
