Friend groups usually shrink as you get older. It can feel like loss and still leave you with the ones who fit.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Most large friend groups are held together by circumstance rather than choice: the same school, the same team, the same bus. When the circumstance ends, the group thins, and that is not a verdict on anyone involved. It still registers as loss, because it is one. What remains are the friendships that were doing something besides proximity.

Rather than holding the whole group together, pick two or three people and do the small maintenance: a call, a visit, remembering what is going on in their week. Let the rest become people you are glad to run into.
