Find a photo of your grandparents at your age. They were just as unsure, with worse haircuts.

REFLECTION
Grandparents arrive in your life as finished people with settled opinions, which makes it nearly impossible to imagine them nervous. In a photograph from their teens, the certainty is gone. They are mid-guess, dressed in whatever was mandatory that year, with no idea which worries would matter. You are looking at your own situation, a few decades upstream.
Go and find one of those pictures, then ask what they wanted to be back then. The gap between the answer and their actual life is the useful part. It tends to loosen the grip of your own five-year plan.
