Ask your grandparents what their first job was. You’ll hear a story worth more than a lot of advice.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
A first job from decades ago comes with the details intact: the pay, the hours, the foreman, what the first wage bought. Those stories carry more weight than advice, because they are specific and true, and they show you somebody you think of as settled starting out with almost nothing. It makes your own beginning look normal.
Ask what they did for their first wage, what it paid, and what they spent it on. One question usually buys an hour, and that is exactly what families lose when nobody asks.
What was your grandparents’ first paid work, exactly?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
