Every addition should justify the maintenance it creates.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Additions are usually evaluated on their benefit and rarely on their upkeep. But everything added has to be checked, updated, explained, and eventually repaired, and that cost recurs indefinitely while the benefit may be occasional. The right comparison is the ongoing burden against the ongoing value, which changes many decisions. Most things fail that test.

Before adding something, estimate what it will require of you every month for the next three years. Compare that with what it will give you. If you cannot say what the maintenance will be, you are not ready to add it.
