Opinions you’ve never had to defend aren’t really yours yet.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Views picked up from a family, a feed or a friend group can sit in your head for years without ever being tested. They feel like convictions because they are familiar. What makes a view yours is having put it in front of somebody who disagreed and found out which parts of it you could actually support.

Take one thing you believe and try to build the strongest case against it, in writing or out loud. Ask someone who thinks differently why they do, and listen for the part you cannot answer. You may keep the opinion, but you will hold it differently and know what it rests on.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which of your beliefs has nobody ever pushed back on?
