Maintenance is a message to whoever will be dealing with this later, often yourself. The part replaced now, the note left, the thing repaired properly rather than temporarily, all reduce what a future person has to handle in a moment you cannot foresee. It is a form of care extended forward in time. Nobody thanks you and it works anyway.

When doing upkeep, think about the person who will encounter this next year. Leave the situation better than the minimum requires. That small extra is what makes the difference later.
