Something that genuinely guides you does not depend on where you are. If how you treat people changes completely between your family, your friends and your workplace, what you have is a set of local rules rather than values, and local rules run out the moment you are somewhere new. A principle shows itself when the surroundings change and nobody there knows you.

Watch yourself across two different rooms this week. Compare how you are with your closest friends and with people you will never see again. Where the two do not match, pick the better one and use it in both.
