The guitar in the closet doesn’t forget you. Pick it up after years and your hands remember more than you’d guess.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Physical learning is stored more deeply than you expect and does not vanish when you stop. Years away leaves you rusty rather than empty, and the first hour back is mostly rediscovery, which is a very different thing from starting over. The fear that you have lost it all is usually what keeps the case shut.

Go and pick up the thing you used to do. The instrument, the sport, the language, the drawing. Give it twenty minutes with low expectations and see what is still in your hands. Rusty is a much shorter road back than you think.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What skill have you shelved that might still be in your hands?
