“I hear you, and I’ve decided” is both respectful and final.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Listening and deciding are two steps, and most difficult conversations go wrong by blurring them. Acknowledging the other person’s point does not reopen the question, it just says you took it in. Decided is the part that ends the discussion, and leaving it out invites another twenty minutes. Respectful and final are not opposites.
Use both halves the next time someone keeps pressing: I hear you, and I have decided. Then stop talking, which is the hard bit. If they go again, repeat it word for word rather than adding anything new.
Which decision of yours needs stating once, then left alone?
