Inheriting somebody else’s ambition is a quiet way to end up with a life you did not choose. The job can be a good one and it will still be the shape of their hopes rather than yours, which is hard to notice from inside because everybody is pleased. Pride from a parent is lovely and it is not the same as fit. The distinction matters most before you commit, not after.

Where a plan is being made for you, ask what you would pick if nobody had an opinion. Say the honest version out loud to one person first. Wanting something different is not ingratitude.
