Smells can drag back memories you didn’t know you still had. Pay attention to the ones that make you feel safe.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Smell has a shortcut to memory that nothing else has. A kitchen, a particular soap, the inside of a car can return a whole afternoon from when you were six, complete, without you having tried to remember it. Most of that is strange and interesting, and some of it is useful, because a few of those smells make you feel safe.

Those ones are worth knowing by name. Work out what yours are, and keep one or two within reach for the weeks that are hard: the same soap, whatever your grandmother’s house smelled like. It is a small thing, and it works faster than talking yourself round.
