Walk your street at 6 a.m. and again at midnight. It’s two different places.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A place is not only its buildings. It is also who is awake in it and what they are doing, which is why the street with delivery vans and joggers and the street with one dog walker and a buzzing lamp share bricks and almost nothing else. You know your neighbourhood at one time of day and mistake that for knowing it.

Pick a morning when you are up early anyway and walk four blocks. Do the same after a late night if you can do it safely and somebody knows where you are. Count three things you had never seen before on a route you thought you knew.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What does your street look like at an hour you never see it?
