Giving should not create a debt the recipient never agreed to owe.

A gift that arrives with an invisible invoice is not a gift. The receiver did not agree to the terms and often did not know there were any until they are being reminded. That kind of giving buys leverage, and it corrodes the relationship it appeared to strengthen.

Before you give something significant, check whether you would be genuinely fine if nothing ever came back and it was never mentioned again. If not, it is a transaction, and it would be more honest to name it as one.
