Pay attention to the compliments you argue with. That’s where your self-image is out of date.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Arguing with praise is a sign your picture of yourself is older than the evidence. The compliment lands on something you have not updated, so the correction comes out automatically: it was luck, it was nothing, anybody could have. Self-image runs a few years behind reality, and the gap shows up most clearly in exactly these moments. That is not modesty, it is out of date.

Next time one arrives, say thank you and leave it there, however awkward that feels. Write it down afterwards in their words rather than yours. After a month, read the list and see what people have apparently been watching you do.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Do you argue with a compliment every time you hear one?
