The hardest conversation after a bad game is the one in your own head. Be fair in it.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

The version in your head has no referee. After a bad game nobody is harsher than you are, partly because there is no one there to disagree, and the private account often bears little relation to what happened. Fairness does not mean going easy, it means getting it right, which includes the things outside your control and the parts you did well. An unfair review teaches the wrong lesson.

Do the review once, properly, out loud if you can. Say what went wrong, what you will change, and one thing that was not yours to carry. Give it ten minutes rather than the whole night.
