Quitting something you’ve truly outgrown isn’t failure. It’s admitting you know yourself better now.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Two different things get called quitting and they deserve different names. Walking away at the first hard part is one. Putting down something that fitted you at fourteen and does not fit now is the other, and it takes more honesty rather than less.

The test is whether you would miss the thing or only the identity. Ask what you would feel on the first week it is not in your schedule: relief, or loss. Relief that lasts past the second week usually means you were right, and you can stop apologising for it.
