Loving an old band nobody your age has heard of is a small, loyal act of knowing what you like.

Liking something that earns you no social credit at all is a reliable sign the liking is yours. Nobody nods along, nobody is impressed, there is no group that comes with it. That strips the preference down to the only reason left, which is that it does something to you.

Keep at least one enthusiasm like that and do not go looking for company in it. Listen on the walk home, learn the names of the records, let it be private. It gives you a reference point for the times you cannot tell whether you like a thing or like being seen liking it.
