Your old room will be someone’s office or a guest room someday. The house remembers less than the people do.

Buildings have no loyalty. A room that held a decade of your life gets repainted and refitted with no sense of what happened in it, because rooms are only containers and the actual record lives in the people who were inside them. That is why going back to an old house can feel oddly flat.

Take a few photographs of your room before it changes, including the contents of the drawers and the wall as it is. Write down two or three specific things that happened there. The house will not hold any of it for you.
