Pass tools on sharper than you got them. That’s the whole job of inheriting anything.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Inheriting something comes with an unstated condition, which is to leave it in better shape than you found it. That applies to a toolbox, a team, a job, even a family argument somebody else started. Caretaking is the actual work, and the people who do it well tend to be the ones who understood that nothing was ever really theirs.
Take one thing you were handed and improve it slightly before it moves on: sharpen the blade, fix the squeak, write the instructions nobody wrote. Do it without mentioning it. The next person will notice and will have no idea who to thank.
What could you leave sharper than it was given to you?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
