If someone says “I trust you” and then checks up on you every hour, they’re still deciding.

Words and behaviour tell you different things, and behaviour is the honest one. Somebody who says they trust you and then checks in constantly is still gathering evidence, which is not necessarily hostile: trust is often in progress, and what they said describes where they would like to be. Taking the statement at face value will confuse you. Watching what they do will not.
You can name it gently: ask what would make them more comfortable and agree on something specific, like one check instead of six. Then keep to it exactly. Trust catches up to the words when the pattern holds.
Who says they trust you and then messages constantly anyway?
