A mentor isn’t someone with all the answers. It’s someone who actually answers your texts.

Availability beats brilliance in this. The most knowledgeable person you can think of is useless to you if they never reply, and a moderately experienced one who answers within a day will change the next two years of your life. Mentoring is mostly a series of short answers to specific questions at the moment you are stuck. That requires access more than genius.

Think of two or three adults who have answered you before and keep those lines warm. Ask narrow questions that are easy to reply to. Send an update occasionally with nothing asked for, so the relationship is not only requests.
