Lie about where you ate lunch and people start fact-checking everything else you say.

The damage from a pointless lie is out of all proportion to the lie. Getting caught in something with no stakes tells people you will do it when there is nothing to gain, which makes everything else you have said suddenly worth checking. A small one has no explanation except habit, and that is the part people cannot unlearn about you.
Notice the reflex to improve a story slightly and leave the story alone. The dull true version is almost always fine. If you have told a pointless one recently, correcting it casually is cheaper now than it will be later.
What pointless small lie have you told recently?
