A person comfortable being foolish occasionally becomes freer to try difficult things.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Willingness to look foolish is a kind of freedom, because most of what stops people from attempting hard things is not the difficulty but the fear of being seen failing at it. If being foolish occasionally is survivable in your own mind, that fear loses most of its grip. The stakes of the attempt fall back to what they actually are.

Deliberately do something you are not good at, in front of someone, this week. A first attempt at a language, an awkward question in a meeting, a game you will lose. You are practicing the recovery, not the skill, and the recovery is what makes the bigger attempts possible later.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What difficult thing would you attempt if looking foolish felt fine?
